Although it was a holiday weekend, the Twitter account of MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough was as busy as ever, fighting back against accusations that the Morning Joe cohost “partied” with the President-elect at Mar-a-Lago. He continued his defense Monday morning on air back in New York. “I’m not gonna let people lie about me,” said Scarborough identifying one of his new year’s media resolutions. The panel discussed the weekend’s event at Mar-a-Lago and how his attendance stirred controversy. A New York Times report from this weekend named names who were in attendance at Donald Trump‘s New Year’s Eve party in Florida. The report from Maggie Haberman included the line, “Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski from MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ were also there.” That’s when Sopan Deb, a reporter for CBS who will soon join the Times, alleged on Twitter, “Morning Joe’s hosts partied with Trump.”
Scarborough went ballistic on Deb via Twitter on Sunday, writing back at one point in his direct response, writing, “Partied? You’re very good at pushing fake news. You should write for CNN. Apparently making up facts is fine if you’re writing about us” and “I’m tired of hacks attacking politicians for lies and false narratives and then doing the same to us.” He piled on Deb even further, writing, “Does @CBSNews know that you just make shit up on your twitter feed?”
Eventually Sopan Deb backed down off of his original claim, admitting, “I should’ve chosen a better word. ‘Attended’ is more accurate.”
Mark Halperin joked Monday morning that the episode — which Scarborough has said was framed around getting an interview with the President-elect to correspond with this month’s inauguration — was “undercovered” by the media.
“Judging from the response that I get,” said Scarborough sarcastically Monday, “every time I meet with anybody associated with [Trump] — no journalist has even done this before.” The Morning Joe cohost said firmly he would fight back against media smears.
As for Deb himself? “I don’t even know who he is,” Scarborough said, refusing to even mention his name. Watch above via MSNBC.
